Abstract
The main objective of the study is to examine influencing factors upon health care expenditures. Particularly, focus is put upon household¡¯s out-of-pocket payments on health. Data from the Household Income and Expenditure Survey conducted in 2005 was used for the empirical analysis. ¡¯Health care expenditure by household¡¯, or household out-of-pocket payment on health, is composed of three parts: expenditures on medical services, on drugs, and on medical supplies and devices. The results show that household¡¯s out-of-pocket payment on health is statistically significantly related to the family size as well as the scale of household consumption. These findings would contribute not only to understanding the household¡¯s behavioral patterns but also to constructing more accurate National Health Accounts and more exact Total Health Expenditure. Household Income and Expenditure Survey data, which is analyzed in this study, has been the main source for the construction of privately financed health expenditure in the National Health Accounts. Family size¡¯s statistical significance with health expenditure per household suggests that weighting by family size is indispensible for the transformation of the Household Income and Expenditure Survey data into the nation-wide figures.
